- Cabinet Building in Middle Tennessee | SawStop Series
We take a lot of pride in how we work, so being asked by SawStop to share our process meant a lot. This wasn’t about putting something together just for the camera. It was about showing how we actually approach our work. SawStop provided the saw. We brought the know-how. In this two-part series, we build a basic shaker-style pocket-hole cabinet with a built-in toe-kick. Each video has a cut sheet for you to screenshot, and be sure to follow along with the arrows and images in each tutorial. As a custom carpentry company serving Middle Tennessee, this is the same process we bring to every cabinet project, from built-ins to dressers and towers for closets and custom pieces. Part 1: Building the Cabinet Box Everything starts here. In Part 1 , we focus on building the cabinet box. The box is the foundation of every cabinet project. Getting this right is critical. Having clean cuts, square assembly and attention to detail at this stage is how we determine how everything else fits and functions. What sets us apart? We build our toe-kick directly into the cabinet box, rather than setting a box on a 2x4 frame later. Learn how we do this in the video! Building a Basic Cabinet, Part 1: The Cabinet Part 2: Doors, Drawers and Shelf Part 2 is where the cabinet comes to life. In this video, you’ll learn how we build out the five-piece shaker style doors, drawer and shelf, bringing together function and finish. These are the details people see and use every day, and they require just as much precision as the structure behind them. Building a Basic Cabinet, Part 2: Doors & Drawers Why This Partnership Matters Custom cabinetry is all about precision, and safety should never be an afterthought. That’s why working with SawStop made this series so meaningful. Their saws are engineered to protect the operator while delivering the accuracy we demand in every cut. How? Each saw has a built-in safety system that stops the spinning blade on skin contact, saving woodworkers from potentially life-altering injuries and missed paychecks. Partnering with SawStop allows us to showcase our process without compromise, giving you a clear look at what it takes to build quality cabinets safely and efficiently — in this series and in our everyday work. It’s a reminder that the right tools, combined with the right skills, make all the difference in professional craftsmanship. We use the SawStop 5HP Industrial Cabinet Saw with the Overarm Dust Collection . If you haven't heard of SawStop before, be sure to check them out. They are Made in America (Oregon) and are engineered by woodworkers, for woodworkers. Thinking About a Cabinet Project? If you’re planning custom cabinets in Middle Tennessee, this is exactly the level of detail and care you should expect. Whether you’re a homeowner, builder or designer, the difference shows up in: How everything fits How it functions over time And how it looks years down the road Custom cabinet building in Middle Tennessee is what we do! Everything is designed to fit your space and built to last. If you have a project in mind, feel free to reach out . We’re always happy to talk through ideas, timelines and what it takes to do it right.
- Top Instagram Posts of 2025
Because sometimes the best way to tell the story is to let the work (and the moments) speak for themselves. Why Look Back at 2025 Now? Why wood we look back now? We wanted to see what made the cut . Okay, we’ll keep the Carpentry Dad Jokes for later. The truth: We started the year off strong. Matt has already completed more than 10 projects and has many more in the queue. That, and we genuinely wanted to take time to reflect on everything we accomplished and what we want to do next. It helps us create goals and plan for the future. Looking back, 2025 was a big year: new projects, new ideas and a lot of moments worth sharing. Instagram ( TikTok and YouTube ) became our running highlight reel: behind-the-scenes clips, finished projects we’re proud of, lessons learned and a few posts that really struck a chord. This blog post pulls together our top Instagram posts of 2025 in one place. So if you missed them the first time (or want to revisit them), here they are! Plus, you'll get a little extra context you won’t find on social. How These Posts Were Chosen We picked these posts based on a mix of: Engagement (views, likes, comments, shares, saves) Conversations they sparked Moments that represent where we are headed Unexpected partnerships Personal favorites (because hey, it's our company) Some performed well. Some just mattered. Most importantly, we stayed true to our organic content. We have yet to pay for ads, boosts, partnerships or verifications. We remain a small, husband and wife team who proudly creates all our content. Top Instagram Posts of 2025 1. Library Meets Window Seat Date posted: January 28, 2025 Why this post mattered: Matt personally enjoyed building and installing this project because our son, Sebastian, helped him during his first college winter break. Any time you can spend with your kids is time well spent. Plus, can we talk about the design? It’s pretty awesome. What people connected with: The design! Our followers loved the concept and could envision themselves with a blanket, cup of tea and a book. Our first video (nearly 800K views, 8K likes ) requested seeing the finished design, but it had yet to be painted by the finish crew. Once it was complete we came back and showed it again (nearly 500K views, 4.7K likes) — the homeowners chose a simple and classic shade of white. Toilet Paper Storage With Sliding Doors Date posted: May 28, 2025 + September 21-22, 2025 Why this post mattered: Anytime there is unique storage, it’s intriguing to our audience. We posted it twice, and both times it was viewed, liked, shared...quite a bit (over 1M views, collectively). It led to several requests for this build hitting our inbox. We can thank 2020 for people still wanting toilet paper storage. If you want this in your home, there are a few things to keep in mind before you "pass the toilet paper!" Due to code, you must have an equal distance on each side of your throne. Most awesome designs like these take advanced planning, and can't always be added. There are other solutions if your home has already been built. We are happy to consult on options if you're in the Middle Tennessee area. What people connected with: The space-saving, easy-access design! And some failed to connect with the concept of a water closet! In fact, we are shocked with the amount of people who have never heard of a water closet or confuse them with a half bath. A water closet is a separate toilet room within a larger bathroom, similar to a bathroom stall, offering privacy. We promise you, there is a sink in the bathroom and the homeowners wash their hands. Sigh. This post led to a unique discussion about in-wall storage, which we have done, too. We responded to a comment with a video the following day. Soon after, we noticed some of you taking on that build. Kudos! We’ll gladly be a #trendsetter. For those of you who are DIY, remember—just like with the toilet paper storage—this takes planning. We do NOT recommend removing studs from your wall unless you are a licensed contractor, know the building code in your area and understand load-bearing walls. This solution was planned with the builder, and the stud we removed was not needed. Vertical Material Racks Date posted: March 18, 2025 Why this post mattered: We gave a glimpse into systems that make our operations efficient. And just like the toilet paper storage, people had opinions. Almost 400K people, to be exact. What people connected with: Most viewers were fellow woodworkers who connected with the Vertical Material Rack setup. They either agreed with how we stored material or did the exact opposite and felt the need to let us know we were wrong. Well, friends, it’s important to remember there is more than one correct way to do things . It doesn’t always have to be this OR that. It can be this AND that. Whether you choose taking the highway or the scenic route, you can end up at the same destination. We are a custom shop that has worked its way up to having a constant flow of projects. Our material never sits for long periods of time. Our setup works for us to grab and cut. If we had longer wait periods between builds, we would likely operate differently. That’s just not the case. 4. Made True Posts Date posted: Sporadically throughout 2025. Why these posts mattered: Made True is a storytelling blog series by MT Trim Co that highlights real makers doing exceptional work in the world of woodworking, trades, design, and creative entrepreneurship. Each feature takes you beyond the surface — from their workshop routines to their big leaps of faith, favorite tools, and personal wins. Craftsmanship isn’t just in the work — it’s in the story. Collectively, we had more than 120K views on Instagram alone for our five features, bringing more eyes to their work and our community. Be sure to tap each person below and learn more about their craft! What people connected with: People love hearing the story behind people’s craft. And more so, people appreciate how MT Trim Co fosters a sense of community in the trades. If you want to be featured or know someone who should be, let us know . It’s free. 5. Be Smart, Carry-On Date posted: April 3, 2025 Why this post mattered: Carry-On Trailers approached us. They saw the work we do, noticed a direct correlation between their product and how it could make our work more efficient, and they reached out. A relationship was formed. We were gifted their new SmartFold Trailer and were immediately impressed. The video was not scripted — we gave a real, honest testimonial. We also got to meet with their engineers about the product, give feedback and learn more about what’s to come. Super cool! Note: We are very particular about who we partner with, as it’s a direct reflection of who we are as a brand. Let us be clear. We do not give our partners access to run ads to our audience. Why? Because you didn’t sign up for that. Plus, we worked to grow our audience; they didn’t. What does this mean? It means every post you see with a partner product is not boosted or paid to reach more people by us or our partner. It's organic, like the rest of our content. We believe our work and words speak for themselves. What people connected with: The trailer’s design functionality, hands down. We showed firsthand how the trailer operates, making loading and unloading much easier. It’s a smart and innovative design — in one swift action, the sides of the trailer fold down. Mind blown. It’s truly just smart! Shout out to their marketing team on the name! 2025 Patterns and What this Means for 2026 Everyone loves a good reveal — when we are able, we’ll be sure to show finished projects. We primarily work with homebuilders on new builds, meaning they have a separate crew do the finishing. We do our best to collect after images from builders and clients alike! Believe us, we are sad we don’t get to see every project finished, too! But, we are a carpentry company, not a painting company. Unique builds can be controversial. As hard as it is to deal with some of the negative comments, we are up for a good challenge because a strong design deserves to be shown. We will continue to storytell and provide building tutorials. But, you’ll have to head over to YouTube to see our longer tutorials. Made True will live on. We are open to featuring woodworkers, makers, designers, manufacturers and anyone in the trades! We’ll continue to be social. Afterall, Instagram is a social network. So don’t hesitate to drop a comment or DM us. We are happy to share recommendations, brainstorm and collaborate. We will continue to partner with the right people. We value companies that have the best interests of tradespeople in mind and who are passionate about making our everyday lives a little bit easier. If we showcase a product. It’s not to push it on you, it’s because we are proud to use it. So if you’re in the industry and have questions, ask us — because we will give you real, honest feedback. And for fun, here's our top post of 2026... so far ! How to See Posts in Real Time? - Turn Something Old into Something New
Who here has watched “Flea Market Flip” on HGTV? (Share this blog if you answered yes!) It’s the show where teams scour flea markets for unique finds to upcycle into new designs. After binge-watching that show, this turn something old into something new coffee-table design came to mind. Our Challenge We needed a long-run coffee table for our upstairs living space — our bonus room above the garage. This room is our “Creative Cave,” where music, art, movies and writing take place. It’s the room where we hang out as a family and occasionally indulge in snack attacks. It’s cozy, artsy and unique. We upgraded our furniture with a five-piece modular couch primarily shaped into a long L. It’s perfect for hosting all of us at once—it’s beyond comfortable—but makes most coffee tables seem small or too wide. After shopping for a solution for months, we couldn’t agree on what to buy. We also couldn’t agree on what to build. Resin-pour tables seem too trendy and wouldn’t stand the test of time for our home’s design. Live edge tables are unique but would clash with our home’s style. White oak is beautiful, but the room’s lack of natural light wouldn’t do it justice. We were at a standstill. Our Solution A “Flea Market Flip” marathon led Traci to scroll through Facebook Marketplace, hoping to find a fresh idea. And there it was! A pair of two long vintage windows. She quickly messaged the seller, and they became hers for just $40. Like any wife with a vision, Traci strategically left the windows and a sketch of her reimagined table design for Matt to find when he came home. In a matter of days, Matt brought the vision to life. Matt doesn’t have honey-do lists. Only honey-done lists. Watch the videos for the reveal! Preparing the Windows Before + After The Perfect Coffee Table Does Exist : Sometimes you need to build it yourself. If you have created an upcycled design, tell us ! Have an idea, but need help executing it? We can help you turn something old into something new, too!
- 3 Essential Carpentry Skills
It takes mad skills to be a carpenter, like knowing how to measure, read plans, work power tools and understand safety protocols. There are also essential carpentry skills. And they may not be what you’d expect. For fun, we asked our Instagram followers what skills they thought were essential for carpentry. We got an overwhelming response of predicted answers, like math and measuring. We got a few ridiculous ones, too, like you must “have a high pain tolerance” and “look good in flannel.” While accurate, these skills are trainable. And if you don’t look good in flannel and cry easily, too bad. (Just kidding.) As a carpenter navigating the innovative and ever-changing world of home building, we believe the foundation of true craftsmanship is leadership, critical thinking, and an abundance of patience. When every nail, floating shelf and Instagram post can connect you with home builders, visionary designers and eager homeowners, it’s important to think beyond the basic skills to stand out. Let’s start with leadership. Does this flannel make Matt look like a leader or what? Leadership Leadership is fluid. There is no hierarchy, and there are several different styles. Whether you’ve been in the trade for years or are just getting started, think of how you lead. It will make you a better carpenter! Three leadership areas we enjoy are knowledge sharing, communication and leading by example. Carpentry is a trade where sharing knowledge through mentorship is invaluable. We full-heartedly believe in fostering continuous learning by helping others grow their skills. That’s why we take time to show how we build items through reels and quick tutorials on social media. We also believe that mentorship is never one-directional. There is always more than one way to execute the same build. As a tradesperson, continuous education is needed to grow as a leader and professional. Strong communication is one of our top leadership skills. Naturally, this skill is essential when plans, timelines and resources need to be adjusted, or when issues arise. We also associate communication with building relationships. That’s why we share expertise, ideas and resources to guide peers and provide insight to clients. We use communication to foster collaboration, resolve conflicts and keep morale up. We are open to questions, and we ask them. An open dialogue is what keeps our industry moving. Ensuring projects meet (or exceed) client expectations and deadlines is also a form of leadership. When you do what you say you will do, you lead by example. It’s like the phrase, “actions speak louder than words.” By following through on a project, you set the bar high and can be recognized as a leader in the industry! Tip: Rely on your patience and critical thinking to lead decisions. This is the serious face Matt makes when he thinks too hard. Critical Thinking If you think every carpentry gig comes with building plans, you are sorely mistaken. Sure, sometimes we get project renderings, and oftentimes we get inspiration pictures. You know what we don’t get? A step-by-step guide that tells you how to build, install and problem-solve for functionality while conquering onsite challenges. The truth is, carpentry projects will come with unexpected challenges. (We almost expect that there will be something unexpected!) Designs can change, weather can derail plans and supplies can be delayed. When this happens, we can’t say, “guess that’s it for today,” even though we’ve probably thought that a time or two. Instead, we pause, strategize and move forward. Critical thinking comes into play beyond problem-solving for the unexpected. Sometimes, you just have a unique build or a complicated space. You might have all the details, but it takes some extra planning to ensure the work turns out quality. So how does this skill actually work? To think critically, you must consider all your options. Pro tip: It’s usually more than two — so if you think considering “this or that” or “whether or not” will solve it, think again. Utilize the “what if” concept, where you ask yourself “what if” until you have an answer. Be sure to think of the big picture and don’t get stuck in the details. Be okay with finding a few potential solutions, and let them guide you toward the end goal. This works for trying a new method for an unforeseen job site challenge, a unique build or simply having to reschedule an installation day. (A great book for leadership, decision making and critical thinking: “Decisive” by Chip Heath and Dan Heath .) Tip: Rely on your leadership and patience to think critically and identify solutions that will result in quality work! Don't worry, patience causes Matt to have a nervous smile and his eye to bulge. Patience Construction schedules often change rapidly. One moment, they are on time; the next, they are two weeks behind, and suddenly, something is needed immediately. Patience is essential not only for handling scheduling changes but also for design, decision-making and installation. Let’s look at the big picture. No matter the project—a small pantry, a unique accent wall or a custom closet—when you make a change to a home or add a custom option to a new home, it can weigh heavily on the homeowner or designer. We encourage carpenters to think about more than building it and moving on to the next project. Part of the job is ensuring it meets the intent and usage desired by the designer and/or homeowner. Our builds have purpose, and we should respect the patience and decision-making that goes into each project. Beyond having patience when it comes to working with others, remember to have patience when building and problem solving, too. Trust the process, don’t rush your work, and breathe. Patience helps create quality work while reinforcing safety. Tip: Use your leadership and critical thinking skills to navigate this! In sum, leadership in woodworking is about blending hands-on experience with the ability to manage, mentor and motivate, while ensuring safety, quality and efficiency. And, if you read this far, congratulations! The AI headshots of our Owner and Lead Carpenter, Matthew Whiteis, were for giggles. The truth is, he is one heck of a skilled guy with a passion for building and connecting with people! If you have an idea for a future blog, reel or tutorial, let us know ! - Made True: Accent Wall Designs
Meet Chris Betteridge. When he walks into a home, he doesn’t just see blank walls — he sees potential. As the owner of Accent Wall Designs , located in Scottsdale, Arizona , Chris has built a reputation for transforming empty canvases into conversation pieces. The Initial Spark Chris’s love of woodworking goes back to his high school wood shop days in Chicago, Illinois. While most of his classmates tackled straightforward projects like Adirondack chairs that came with pre-made plans, Chris pushed the limit. His ambition led him to build his parents a media center with custom cabinets and glass doors — all from scratch! That project lit a fire that never went out. Over the years, he remodeled his own homes, sharpening his skills until finally he launched Accent Wall Designs in 2023. What started as a passion became a business, one that continues to grow and wow with every build. From White Walls to Wow Factor Bold accent walls, wainscoting, custom media centers and the ever-popular electric fireplace installs are what Accent Wall Designs is known for. That, and the simple fact clients come to him with a snapshot from Pinterest or a rough idea in mind, and he can turn their visions into something that wows! Chris brings ideas to life, customizing every detail on-site from scratch. So how does he do that? Embracing Technology The introduction of AI has elevated the customer service Accent Wall Designs provides and is instrumental to its business model. Most of his clients have either recently moved into a new build home or are looking to add character to their existing home. Taking a picture of a customer’s blank wall and asking ChatGPT what it's going to look like when it’s done provides a quick and effective visual on the spot. Chris has also used AI to show potential clients what a similar build could look like by rendering versions in a new color or with minor details changed. By embracing technology, it has provided a new level of client-focused service, where homeowners have a way to see their custom project quickly, without having to wait for renderings. See for yourself: a blank white wall > AI rendering > final product! The Pursuit of Perfection Ask Chris what sets him apart as a carpenter, and he’ll tell you without hesitation: he’s “way too anal about everything being perfect.” Wood, after all, is a living material. It’s unpredictable, full of character and you’ll never see the same piece twice. That’s part of its beauty. But even in the face of natural imperfections, Chris pushes for precision. Every cut, every joint, every finish is his chance to bring order to the organic. It’s a balance of respecting wood for what it is while still striving to make it flawless. That relentless pursuit of perfection is what defines his work — and what makes each build unmistakably his. More than What Meets the Eyes And to drive the idea of perfection home, Chris and his team take pride in the details. And that includes the details you’ll never notice. “We’ll paint areas you’ll never see because we know it’s there,” Chris admits with a smile. Every project ends with a walkthrough, clear communication and an open invitation: “call anytime, for anything.” That commitment to trust and transparency is what keeps customers coming back. Lessons in Sawdust If you ask Chris what advice he’d give to someone starting out, he doesn’t hesitate: “Just do it! You’re going to make mistakes, you’re going to have to start over, but you’ll learn something new on every project.” For him, missteps aren’t setbacks. They’re essential stepping stones. In fact, he believes trial and error teaches more than simply following instructions. It’s about understanding the “why” behind every cut, joint, and design choice. Building a Team, One Cabinet at a Time Of all his projects, one stands out: his first media wall with built-in cabinets. It was uncharted territory since launching the business, and the learning curve was steep. But with the support of his business partner, Christian, their team pulled it off seamlessly. That success didn’t just add a new skill to his tool belt — it expanded what clients would trust him with in the future. It was a turning point, proving that confidence is built one project at a time, and now cabinetry has been added to the list of custom projects that they can execute. Tough Builds, Stronger Skills Anything high up off the ground is always a challenge. (We agree!) Chris recalls a faux-beam build that tested his patience and skill. The ceiling trusses were run in a way that didn’t make sense, and his team had to spend an extra two to three hours “treasure hunting” where they were located before they could accurately secure their beam framing. Wrestling with weight, alignment and finishing touches forced him to problem-solve on the fly. It’s challenges like this that remind him why he loves the trade and the advice he previously gave: there’s always something new to learn. While the extra time was frustrating (and neck-straining), the outcome was great! Priced with Purpose Chris is clear-eyed about the business side of woodworking. Not every client will understand the cost of custom craftsmanship, and that’s okay. “A lot of people come in expecting Kia prices, but want a Cadillac.” For him, pricing isn’t just about materials or labor — it’s about the pride of delivering high-quality work that lasts. And for clients who value that, the investment is always worth it. Chris gives some solid advice to his peers: “You have to be OK with someone telling you, ‘I found it cheaper’ or ‘That’s more than we expected.’” If you run a business, you’ve likely heard similar phrases. But remember, “people who say this come back and end up booking with you because of how you treat them and because of the reputation you’ve built.” That matters. He also shared a humbling reminder that you will have customers who won’t question your prices or get a second estimate because they know they want to use you. For him, that’s one of the best compliments they can get! This piece of business advice was shared with him, and now it’s time to share the knowledge. “If you land every job you bid, you’re priced too low.” The Tool Trailer Chris and his team roll around with a 6x12 enclosed trailer that stores all of their tools. The trailer actually serves as a rolling billboard — fully branded with what those who pass by need to know. And, sure he might have a few things outside of the trailer. “Don’t ask my wife about what’s in our garage, her car still fits, that’s all that matters!” His top 3 favorite tools, in no order are: SurfPrep Sander (with dust extractor) Makita Track Saw (Circular Saw Kit + Rails) Stud finder that shows you the width of the stud, like the Franklin Prosenser M210 . Looking Ahead As much as Chris loves working with his hands, the future holds a shift. Eventually, he’d like to “get off the tools.” Before starting his company, most of his career was in sales. It’s evident that’s why Accent Wall Designs has found success — Chris has knack for business, client services and marketing. For now, though, he’s still in the thick of the sawdust, pouring passion into each design. Since high school, Chris has had a dream to buy land and build an entire cul-de-sac of homes and name it after himself. And while he states he isn’t pursuing that any longer, we are all about helping fellow makers reach for the stars. So if you’re located in Arizona, reach out to Accent Wall Designs today . On the Job and Off the Clock When the tools are down, you’ll likely find him on the golf course or spending time with his family. They love dining out at local sports grills. And as his sons get older, he makes time to play baseball, soccer and golf with them, because the reward of spending time with them is worth all the hard work along the way. At its core, Accent Wall Designs is a craft born from passion, persistence, perfection and purpose. For Chris, every build is about more than wood and paint. It’s about creating spaces that feel like home, supporting his family and building a business — and that’s what makes him Made True . Stay connected to Accent Wall Designs! - Made True: Duncwoods
What started as a DM connecting over floating shelves has turned into a camaraderie of sawdust. Meet Christopher Duncan. By day, he works for a global medical supply corporation. But once the workday is done, he heads into his Southern California home’s two-car garage, which he has completely transformed into a woodworking shop. What started in 2019, with a single gifted circular saw and a YouTube tutorial, has grown into Duncwoods , a part-time business and online teaching platform. Though he still considers himself a hobbyist, it’s safe to say woodworking is more than a side hustle for Duncan — it's a passion that has reshaped his life and home. No Tools, No Problem Christopher’s woodworking journey began in the most relatable way: trying to save money. When his wife suggested hiring someone to build a brick planter box for their home, Christopher decided to give it a go himself — even though he had zero experience and didn’t own a single tool. His plan: to build it out of wood to help with the budget. “I told my co-worker what I planned to do, and he gifted me a corded circular saw,” Christopher recalls. “Like any other man who is on a budget and wants to do something for their wife, I watched a few YouTube videos. Then I watched a few more. I built the planter box and BOY was I proud.” Continuing Education That initial build hooked Christopher. He quickly offered to build more for his wife, and one project led to another — each teaching him something along the way. From a headboard to “very ugly” nightstands (his words, not ours), he found himself sharing his process online. After all, he had learned so much from watching YouTube videos that he wanted to give back. People resonated with his willingness to show not just the wins but the learning curve, and before long, they wanted to buy his creations. Every build funded a new tool, fueling his growth. But the real breakthrough for his social media growth came from sharing how he builds his floating shelves. Christopher uses the same process we do — the miter-fold method. He taught it to his followers, and his accounts kept growing! What is the miter fold method? A miter cut allows two pieces of wood to come together, creating a seamless 90-degree angle. The best way to describe the design is that it looks like the wood grains wrap around all sides of the shelf, with no rough or raw edges. Some execute this process using tape along the seams, then folding the pieces together; some do not. There are multiple ways to build things! In the end, the fold comes from the joints coming together, not how it’s built. His passion for learning and teaching others is what continued to grow his online presence. Through Duncwoods, he is officially a part-time content creator, teaching others how to build things for their own home. Ensuring Quality Ask Christopher what’s made him better, and he’ll tell you: his wife. Smart man. The Mrs. Bosses of the world have to keep everyone in line! You know how people say that you are your own worst critic? Well, Christopher says, “My wife is my biggest critic.” In the beginning, getting feedback from her was hard, but when he reflects on her intent, he’s appreciative. “Her honest voice in my head has been my standard for every build.” That tough love has carried into his approach with clients, where quality and precision come first. Learning Through Challenge Every builder has a project that humbles them. For Duncan, it was an entertainment wall in 2023. The build went smoothly until crown molding came into play. Having never coped crown molding before, the simple wrap-around-the-top look wasn’t as easy as it appeared. Keeping his client and quality in mind, he eventually hired someone to help. It’s setbacks like these that only push Duncan forward. “You can plan A-Z before doing a full built-in, but you will have minor or even major changes on site that may occur, and it is okay. It is part of the job, and the way you solve it makes you that much better of a carpenter. We are like magicians." It’s this perspective—that carpenters are part problem-solver, part magician—that keeps him motivated. Every project “requires you to think on your feet and be creative, all while trying to be as effective and efficient as possible. It is a mental challenge!” And, now that he’s gained experience, he’s ready to attempt crown molding again! Knowledge Sharing Every craftsperson has something that sets them apart from their peers. For some, it’s their method of building or a niche they’ve found. But when we asked Duncan what sets him apart as a carpenter, his answer stood out. “I am not a gatekeeper. If I learned how to do something, I am going to share what I learned so it helps others. I am not someone who is going to say that I was self-taught. NO. I learned by watching others do it, trying it myself, failing, winning and bringing my touch into it. If someone wants to use me to bring their vision to life, I take pride in helping that person achieve it through my hands! If that person wants to join me in building so that they one day learn how to do it, I will do it in a heartbeat.” If you haven’t followed Duncwoods online, here’s your sign. He genuinely cares about the learning process, his followers and the entire woodworking community. “I am also very appreciative of the feedback I get online. Not just the feedback about how my project looks, but how it inspired someone to do it themselves. That is the most rewarding part of sharing what I do online. Providing value! Also, the carpentry/woodworking community is the best! Everyone is always so willing to provide help or share tips!” The Tools That Shaped Him Beyond the gifted circular saw and supportive wife, Christopher shared who and what else have shaped his craft. Jesus: That’s right, he’s also a carpenter! But more importantly, he’s Christopher’s ultimate role model. Makita 40v Cordless Track Saw : Duncan loves its mobility and accuracy. Apple iPad : Perfect for on-site design and quoting. Makita Miter Saw : The Duncwoods shop has a miter-saw station, and it’s been efficient for repeatable cuts! Odie's Oil : There’s just something about the reveal of walnut after some oil that gives Christopher goosebumps. Peterman Lumber: “They are amazing people and an honest business. Their warehouse is like a Toys 'R' Us store for woodworkers.” SawStop Table Saw: A dream table saw! Not only does it give Christopher a piece of mind when it comes to his safety, but he will now feel comfortable teaching his son on this equipment in the future. (Rumor has it you just might see Duncwoods and MT Trim Co featured in some SawStop content.) #Goals As Duncwoods continues to grow, Christopher has clear goals: to have one custom build a month and continue to empower more people to try woodworking themselves. Beyond floating shelves, he truly has enjoyed learning the ins and outs of cabinet making. He wants to continue his growth in this area. He also dreams of one day redoing his home office—floor to ceiling—and filming the process so others can learn alongside him. We can’t wait to see that! At The End of The Day For Christopher, woodworking is more than a side business. It’s a way to unwind, connect with his faith and express his creativity. “Corporate money is great,” he reflects, “but working with your hands and mind combined is that much more satisfying.” Faith and family will always remain central to his story. Duncwoods is built on passion, persistence and a belief that carpentry is for everyone willing to try. Through Duncwoods, he continues to share knowledge, inspire others and remind us that even in imperfection, something beautiful can always be Made True. Stay connected to Duncwoods! - Beyond the Wood Shop
If you’ve stumbled across this post, you’ve likely seen us pour our energy into building custom pieces that make houses feel like homes on Instagram , YouTube or TikTok . But when the sawdust settles, we love discovering products, tools and home goods that inspire us in everyday life. This post is a peek into some of our current favorite finds, beyond the wood shop. From the appliances that keep our household running smoothly to the décor that inspires our builds and the little extras we enjoy when we’ve clocked out. 1. Our Home Appliances Tried and true, these are the appliances we use just about every single day in our home. For us, it’s about efficiency, durability, and style. “Are all of our appliances necessary? Probably not. But we believe in treating ourselves to the things we enjoy. If that means an espresso machine, so be it." 2. Home Decor and Design Sure we build stuff, but craftsmanship extends beyond woodwork. The right home décor can transform a space, add warmth and highlight the details of custom builds. You can find great design and good buys on Amazon. Here are some items you can find in our home! “Matt and I have a similar eye for design. We love a natural palette, but aren’t afraid of going with darker colors. You’ll see a lot of blacks, browns, grays and nudes in our home. We love mixing different woods and natural textures with metal finishes.” And shameless plug here. Did you know Traci’s an artist? Check out her work at ArtByTisserat.com . 3. When We’re Clocked Out When we're clocked out, it's not just about the honey-do list. It's about having fun. From kayaking to pool time and hiking and traveling, here are some of our family's favorite finds. “We live near Old Hickory Lake in Tennessee. It’s fun to go out and kayak, fish or just see the water when we are done building. But, sometimes it's just about a quick trip to anywhere.” 4. Inspired By Our Pets Our pets want to be shop animals, but they are better off being cute at home. That's because things like drills and loud trucks scare them. But, since they show up in our social content and rule our lives, here are some of their favorite items, including a few that have inspired custom builds. “Mason, our dog, absolutely loves the Kong Knot Bears, which are commonly known as “baby” in our house. Our cat, Amos, thoroughly enjoys his S-shaped curl scratcher.” From Our Shop to Your Home We take pride in our work, but we also love sharing what inspires us outside the shop. If you check out any of these recommendations , let us know what you think! And, if you’re shopping for something special? Hit us up, we might have a deal in our toolbox for you!
- Made True: Hulse Design Co.
Meet Ryan Hulse, a New England craftsman, storyteller in sawdust and the kind of carpenter who notices details you didn’t even realize were there. Tucked in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, Ryan runs Hulse Design Co. , a one-man operation specializing in woodworking, finish carpentry and custom-built spaces for residential clients. His workshop is where the magic happens—often with his shop dog, Puck, by his side and an iced coffee or two half-finished in the background. Ryan designs most of his builds, crafting everything from bespoke libraries to cleverly built wine cellars, and he installs every piece himself. Attention to detail isn’t just part of the job—it’s the whole reason he got into the trade. From Corporate Dread to Custom Threads of Wood Ryan’s journey into woodworking was carved from a mix of family roots and his total rejection of the corporate world. His grandfather—a carpenter himself—planted the seed, but it was years later, after enduring the soul-crushing 9-to-5, that Ryan realized woodworking gave him something the office never could: joy. “I get to create for clients and build pieces that will last a lifetime. That’s the reward.” Wisdom for the Wannabe Woodworker When it comes to advice, Ryan kept it real. And we suggest that if you’re thinking of making the career switch, you listen. “Start with the basics. Don’t blow your savings on fancy gear right away. Learn how each tool works and upgrade as your projects grow. There's an incredible network of makers and tradespeople out there—connect with them. Ask questions, stay humble, and build at your own pace. Every master builder started with scrap wood and a dream.” Ryan’s college professor Jay Hill instilled the value of not just the finished product, but embracing the entire process—even the constructive criticism that comes afterward. “That’s how we grow as craftspeople.” He also has a message to younger generations: “working with your hands is a rewarding and respected career, not a degrading one.” We’re with Ryan on this one! There is a great sense of community, and the career does more than pay the bills. Building Trust by Building Smart Whether the project is in a modern home or a 200-year-old New England farmhouse, Ryan’s strategy for success is simple: clear communication and a high standard of craft. “I emphasize transparency from day one. And mistakes? They happen. What matters is how you handle them.” The Price of Precision Ryan breaks down his pricing into three key stages: Deposit #1: Covers materials and sourcing. Deposit #2: Covers shop time, prep, building, finishing and installing. Final Payment: That’s the profit! “I stay transparent with clients throughout to build trust and avoid surprises.” A Shop Full of Chaos + Character Are you even a carpenter if there isn’t just a little chaos and character when building? Ryan’s the real deal. When asked what’s in his toolbox and shop, he did not disappoint. “Scrap wood? Hoarded. Pencils? Everywhere—yet never one when I need it. Tape measures? At least 10, all hiding. And let’s not forget the dust-covered iced coffee cups and the shop animals who think they run the place (they do).” A Wine Cellar That Wowed One of Ryan’s proudest projects? A white oak wine cellar with sleek lighting, tight joinery, and a rich finish that made the room feel elegant and functional. The kicker? It all had to work in a tight space. “The client was thrilled, and those are the moments you remember.” A Challenging Project Turned Big Picture Not every job is smooth sailing. Ryan recalls a challenging library built-in for a historic home where nothing was square or level. Every board had to be customized on-site—but the effort paid off. The finished space even ended up as a filming location for a Netflix show. “Details to come,” he teases. (Don’t worry, friends, we’ll update you when he updates us!) Let this be a reminder that hard work and perseverance come with reward. The Hulse Hallmarks Favorite Wood: White oak. Timeless, strong, and beautiful. Top Three Tools: Painter’s key, Paper Mate #2 triangle pencil and a leather hip clip. Go-to Finish: Bumbleshutes —local to him, quality and a favorite for good reason. For those of us not in New England, we have Amazon ! Dream Build: A full-home library made entirely from reclaimed wood in a historic New England home—hidden doors included. Unwind Mode: Beer league hockey goalie. Grill. Cold beer. Family. Puck (the dog, not the hockey kind—though also that). The Mobile Shop: A Ford Maverick, of course! (That's what we drive, too!) Through June 30, 2025, Ford has 20% off accessories with code SHOP625. You must create a new account or be logged into your Ford Accessories account for the promo code to work! In Sum: Hulse is a Builder with Heart + Hockey Pads Whether it’s teaching others the trade, creating legacy pieces or defending the goal in beer league hockey, Ryan stays grounded in passion and purpose. What keeps him going? “My family. Seeing their faces every day.” And that deep pride of driving through town, pointing at homes and saying, “I built something in that one…and that one…and that one.” Don’t worry if it annoys your family, Ryan, we are all guilty of doing that! Ryan’s not just a guy with a saw and a measuring tape—he’s a craftsman, thinker, problem-solver, proud small business owner and family man. Hulse Design Co. was built from a deep love of creating, a refusal to settle and the pursuit of a life that feels true. And that’s what makes him Made True . Stay connected to Hulse Design Co. - Made True: Knock On Wood
Meet Yesenia “Yesi” Gomez, a fierce business owner and maker based in Central Florida who can build just about anything – Knock On Wood (pun fully intended!). With a name like Yesi, it’s no surprise her motto is #YesICanBuildThat . But there’s more to her story than clever hashtags and custom cuts. From the Courtroom to the Workshop If you had told Yesi 10 years ago that her future would smell like cedar and she’d run on Dr. Pepper (Strawberries & Cream, to be exact), she probably would’ve laughed, then objected. Because that’s what you do after 20 years in law. But in 2022, after two decades of legal briefs, she traded in her blazer for a tool belt and hasn’t looked back since. How it Started vs. How it’s Going It all started back in 2016, when the itch to transform her home sparked something more than just weekend projects. From basic shelves to a full-blown custom fireplace, she renovated her home piece by piece, gaining confidence—and an ever-growing tool collection—with each project. From experimenting with building outdoor patio furniture to creating a reading loft for her little girl at the time, it was clear that this was her calling. Fast forward to now, Yesi spends her days building custom furniture, desks, built-ins – basically anything and everything that involves wood. She’s running a full-fledged woodworking business out of her shop, solo. Yes, solo. As in, she is a designer, builder, estimator, accountant, marketer, and content creator – all rolled into one. Her favorite part of the process? Building and finishing. While design has its place, it’s the hands-on transformation that really lights her up. One Step at a Time Her secret to managing it all without burning out? Pacing. “I’ve learned not to take on more than what I can handle. I space out my builds – so I can fully dedicate time to each one and deliver quality builds and meet my clients’ expectations.” That, and she understands when you run a business on your own, you can embrace the tools at your fingertips – even technology. “It’s a plus for us,” noting it can help with everything from administrative duties to creating sketches and generating any report needed. Pro Tip: Adaptability is just as important as precision, as it allows you to focus on what matters. A Build to Remember Among her many projects, one favorite stands out: a custom sink counter for a vintage shop. Designed to fit a tricky space, it featured scalloped wood details and a built-in sink. We must say, it turned out beautiful! A Dream Build A full-blown camper or RV renovation. And if anyone can pull that off, it’s her. She’s got the skill, the vision, and the drive. Building Smart Yesi recently introduced a collapsible, mobile bar and cart design to her catalogue of Knock On Wood builds. It ’s perfect for… ✅ Garage hangout hosts ✅ Artists needing mobile table displays ✅ Crafters needing smart storage Each cart is custom-made, with choices in size, wood, color, and finish. Tool-Time As for tools, she’s all-in on Makita – especially her track saw, trim router, and planer. If you haven’t already seen it, be sure to catch her in this official partnership video , showing some serious love for the MakTrack modular storage system! Quick Cuts Favorite Wood: Lately, cedar – inspired by a recent deck/fence build. The scent and the lightness of the wood inspired this answer, but we know she truly enjoys all wood species. Favorite Finish: “It depends on the build. My go-to for hardwood furniture builds or tables is Rubio Monocoat .” A solid choice! Advice to Younger Self: “Don’t wait to pursue the things that bring you true happiness.” Advice for the Aspiring Maker When asked what advice she’d give to those looking to get into the trade, Yesi kept it real. “Don’t let anything hold you back. There are so many resources out there to learn from – there are no excuses, just a lack of self-motivation.” In other words: if you want to build, start building. And when you do, celebrate the wins, no matter how small – they’re what keep the momentum going. So what keeps Yesi going? “Seeing the satisfaction on my clients’ faces when I finish a build. And on a personal level, I’d say my accomplishments. It brings me satisfaction and motivation to continue growing my business.” Dreaming Bigger Her advice and motivation seem to be a philosophy that applies to her own growth, too. Whether she’s refining her technique or tackling bigger goals—like growing her shop space or eventually hiring help—she’s always pushing forward. Why She Loves the Trade? That’s simple. “Being able to build something out of nothing—well, other than wood—and the fact that you can bring most visions to reality.” Mentor to Master If you’re wondering where her passion all comes from, look no further than her dad. “I was about seven,” she says. “He was slowly renovating the basement of my childhood home, and I was his assistant.” She recalls handing him the hammer, tools, screws. Endless trips to lumber stores and going tool shopping almost every weekend. Although she was very young at the time, she was awestruck by what he could do on his own. “Those memories are what fuel my love and passion for building and carpentry.” Yesi, whether she realizes it yet or not, is also a mentor herself. She’s also incredibly collaborative—actively engaging with others in the woodworking community. And, all good mentors have the desire to become better, learn more, and master the craft – three things she tells us she wants to do. Let’s be honest, she’s on the path to do just that! When the Sawdust Settles After the sawdust settles, it’s all about a hot shower, cozy clothes, and couch time with her dog and family. That’s when the satisfaction sets in, and the motivation for whatever comes next. And at the end of the day, what keeps her going isn’t just the work – it’s the joy. Yesi embodies what it means when passion finds purpose. And that is what makes her Made True . - Made True: Paper and Pipes
At MT Trim Co, craftsmanship isn’t just in the work — it's in the story. Our M ade T rue series shares the stories of woodworkers who turn raw material into art — those whose craftsmanship comes from passion, precision and stubborn creativity. Meet JJ Galipeau from Paper and Pipes : the East Nashville craftsman who proves that with a good pipe, a little bourbon and a lot of grit, anything is possible. Operating out of a cozy 12’ x 20’ shop in East Nashville, Paper and Pipes is a one-man operation focused on furniture and custom woodworks. The shop may be small, but it’s smartly designed — moveable tools, a built-out lumber loft and a constant hum of creative energy. While most current projects are for individuals and homeowners, there’s a clear vision for future growth into commercial and retail spaces. Where It All Began Like many great stories, this one started with a question — and a pipe. Ten years ago, with a pipe in hand, JJ thought, "How hard could it be to make one of these?" The answer: hard enough to spark a decade-long passion. His first, slightly "ugly but proud" pipe led to a small side hustle with his wife designing prints, giving birth to the name Paper and Pipes — a name he’s kept as a nod to humble beginnings. Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Woodworkers His advice? Don’t wait. Start now. Start small. Whether you're switching careers or just dabbling, use your free time wisely and allow your skills and business to grow naturally. Favorite Builds (and Sentimental Wins) Among the many projects completed, a hall tree built from his great-grandfather's old bed stands out. Crafted for his mother, it was a project full of meaning, history and—let's be honest—a lot of brownie points. Love you, Ma. Quality and Client Experience From the start, communication is key. JJ’s the type to ask plenty of questions up front (no assumptions allowed) and believes in using tools like SketchUp to help clients visualize the final product. It’s all about keeping clients informed and happy — because surprises are for birthdays, not custom builds. The thing he loves the most: “The challenge of something new, and the look on a customer's face when I can bring their idea to life.” Tools of the Trade A compact shop requires smart organization. Nearly every one of JJ’s tools is mobile, flexing to fit each project’s needs. Like many of us carpenters, his tools come to the job site. Some favorite tools of the trade include a PEC 4-inch square for precise layouts, a vintage 1940s Stanley Bailey No.4 Planer and a rip saw once wielded by his blacksmith great-grandfather. Talk about legacy craftsmanship! Lessons Learned: Challenges and Pricing Woodworking isn’t without its challenges. A plywood dining table taught him that seemingly simple materials can be deceptively tricky, but overcoming those struggles made the final piece even more satisfying. Pricing? That's a work of art, too. Using a thoughtful formula shared by his mentor, he strikes a balance between fair pricing and making a sustainable living. Sustainability, Safety and Shop Culture Sustainability plays a big role. Reclaimed lumber is used wherever possible, reducing waste and adding stories to every project. Safety is serious business, too! Even as a one-man operation, he treats himself like an employee, keeping protective gear and emergency supplies within easy reach. Beyond the Build When he’s not planing wood or sketching designs, he's dreaming bigger: becoming East Nashville’s go-to custom furniture shop, offering apprenticeships, and continuing to connect with the community through his work. Rapid-Fire Favorites Favorite woods? Cherry and (sometimes reluctantly) plywood. Favorite finishes? General Finishes High Performance Flat (three coats) and Rubio Monocoat for its simplicity. Favorite way to unwind? A pipe and a glass of bourbon. Parting Wisdom His favorite piece of business advice? “If you're just starting out—you’re already ahead of 99% of people.” His advice to his younger self? “ What are you waiting for? Seriously, get going!” At MT Trim Co, we’re proud to spotlight craftsmen like JJ from Paper and Pipes, who remind us that the best work is often born from the smallest spaces, the wildest ideas and a relentless passion for the craft. Cheers to many more builds (and pipes) ahead! And, JJ — just as you bring your clients’ visions to life, we know you will lead Paper and Pipes to become East Nashville’s go-to furniture and design shop! Keep building, and thank you for being part of the Made True community!
